This time, instead of Kratos, players will be taking the role of his dead wife Faye, who is fighting in the afterlife of the gods.

The State of Play presentation of Sony ended with a 20-minute long gameplay trailer, and it was for a brand-new game from its first-party studio Santa Monica Studio. God of War Laufey is returning to the hit action franchise, but with a new protagonist. This time, instead of Kratos, players will be taking the role of his dead wife Faye, who is fighting in the afterlife of the gods.

The trailer showed off Faye’s end in the God of War games again, but this time, she wakes up in a strange land where she is now stuck in the afterlife, still trying to keep her promises. Her moveset and combat are different from how Kratos deals with enemies. Here, players will have much more agility and magic-focused powers while still being able to take plenty of hits thanks to her godly status.

“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic,” says the studio. “Harness Faye’s speed, control, and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision.”

Players will be fighting new types of gods in this new land, which is being called the Everywhen. Accompanying Faye (played by Deborah Ann Woll) will be Phranque the cosmic cube (played by Jack Quaid), as well as the enchanted sword ribbon Rue (played by Perlina Lau).

“The Everywhen is the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns, a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know. A location in which gods and creatures from different mythologies come together, and not always in harmonious coexistence,” adds the studio. “We’ve shown a brief look at two of the gods Faye will encounter in the Everywhen — Sekhmet and Begtse, both decidedly less than friendly towards a new face suddenly appearing in their midst.”

Unfortunately, Santa Monica Studio did not attach a release date (or even a release year) to God of War Laufey today. The title is coming to PlayStation 5, and wishlists are already available on the PlayStation store here.
