What to Check Before Buying or Upgrading

Windows 11 has matured a lot since its launch, but activation and licensing still confuse many users, especially those moving from Windows 10 or switching editions. If you are planning to upgrade or buy a license in 2026, a few checks beforehand can save you from activation errors, wasted money, or an edition that does not fit your needs.

Here is what actually matters before installing, upgrading, or activating Windows 11 Pro.

Home or Pro: which edition do you really need?

Before anything else, decide whether you need Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro. Home covers everyday use: browsing, office work, gaming, streaming, and general personal computing.

Windows 11 Pro adds features aimed at power users and professionals, including BitLocker device encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V virtualization, Windows Sandbox, and the ability to join a domain or use Microsoft Entra ID in a business environment.

If you work with sensitive data, need to connect remotely to your machine, run virtual machines, or manage a work device, Pro can be useful. If you do not need those features, Home is often enough. You can upgrade from Home to Pro later, but you should still check your edition before buying anything.
