“A new hunting ground for the ultimate apex predator” – Alien: Isolation 2 gets its first proper trailer

Creative Assembly and Sega have screened the first proper trailer for Alien: Isolation 2, confirming in the process that the new xenomorph horror game is set on a planet. A planet of windy trees, thick fog, and much wreckage. There is a cage with the bars cracked and bent outward. I’m pretty sure they weren’t keeping spare fuel cells in there.

Its new taste for the open air aside, the game appears to play much like its 2014 predecessor: it’s a first-person affair with a distinctly underpowered protagonist, armed with little more than some opposable thumbs. You do get flares, used for seeing and, I imagine, creating distractions. Without further ado, here’s that trailer.

Speaking to Geoff Keighley at this year’s Summer Game Fest Live showcase, creative director Al Hope had a little more to share about the setting. “This time, we’re unleashing the alien on an unsuspecting colony world,” he said. “From the claustrophobic confines of the colony itself to the exposed and storm ravaged landscapes surrounding it, Kurosaki Station is a new hunting ground for the ultimate apex predator.”

At the risk of repeating my opinion of the game’s previous teaser video, I’m a little narked about the prospect of planetside Alien: Isolation. As a piece of creature design, the Alien works best as a sinister extension of spaceship architecture. Also, this planet is very drizzly, and we get enough of that stuff in the UK. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to the game’s portrayal of a trashed and failing colony. Lotta lore to collect, in these trashed and failing colonies.
