Claude Sonnet 4.6 is officially here for GitHub Copilot, but you might need to flip a specific switch to see it on organization accounts.
Microsoft has announced the availability of Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.6 in GitHub Copilot after the model launched on Tuesday. This is the latest agentic coding model from Anthropic and it excels at complex agentic coding tasks and executing search operations.
This integration in GitHub Copilot is being deployed across various interfaces, including the web platform, mobile app for iOS and Android, and the Command Line Interface (CLI). Notably, this comes less than ten days after GitHub Copilot added OpenAI’s GPT-5.3-Codex, which is also an agentic coding agent.
Access to the new model is restricted to subscribers on the Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise tiers. It is currently being rolled out gradually. For organization accounts, administrators will need to manually enable the Claude Sonnet 4.6 policy within their Copilot settings to grant user access.
The decision to leave admins the job of manually enabling the model ensures that organizations maintain oversight of model usage and policy compliance. It also allows teams to match coding needs with the best LLM suited for the task’s technical requirements.
Claude Sonnet 4.6 is available in Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio. Right now it has a 1x premium request multiplier when you send queries, however, this pricing is tentative and is subject to future adjustments.
The launch is good for developers who can now toggle between leading AI models directly within their IDE. The specialized search and agentic capabilities of Sonnet 4.6 are expected to streamline workflows involving large-scale codebase navigation and automatic task delegation.
