Google Search Adds Preferred Sources to AI Overviews, AI Mode

TL;DR

  • AI Rollout: Google´s Preferred Sources feature is now available in AI Overviews and AI Mode, making chosen publishers more visible inside AI answers.
  • User Setup: Users can add sites by name or URL, while badges and carousels can surface those picks after a summary appears.
  • Publisher Stakes: Google says preferred links get more clicks, but publishers still face weaker search traffic as summaries and follow-up prompts absorb the first interaction.

Google has brought its Preferred Sources feature into AI Overviews and AI Mode, giving users a way to keep chosen publishers visible when an AI answer appears before the open web. Google says selected outlets will stand out because “Just like in Top Stories, your Preferred Sources will be clearly labeled to stand out.”

Company figures tied to the rollout point to twice-as-likely clicks and more than 345,000 selected sources, though Google has not independently substantiated those adoption numbers. Readers now see publisher preference inside the answer layer rather than only beside a ranked list.

Google also says people have already picked a large number of outlets inside the setting, which suggests the tool has become more than a niche preference menu. Search is now carrying that preference directly into AI responses instead of leaving it in the background.

User-selected outlets gain AI answer visibility at the moment Google decides which summary, follow-up prompt, and supporting links appear first. Preferred Sources is becoming part of Search’s interface logic, not just a background setting.

How Preferred Sources Work Inside AI Results

Users manage the feature through Search personalization settings, where they can add a site by name or URL. AI Overviews and AI Mode carry that preference into a part of Search that often answers the first layer of a question before the user reaches the source links.

Inside AI results, a short answer can lead into Preferred badges and publisher carousels. AI result pages keep article choices visible after the summary while giving selected outlets a clearer visual lane.
