OpenAI brings Codex to ChatGPT and introduces shareable interactive Sites


ChatGPT is probably the most popular AI tool in the world, with nearly one billion monthly active users. Last year, OpenAI introduced Codex, a separate service targeting programmers and knowledge workers. Since the launch of the Codex desktop app in February, usage of Codex has grown sixfold, and it now has more than five million weekly active users. While developers remain the largest user group, knowledge workers now represent about 20% of Codex users and are growing three times as fast as developers.

To support knowledge workers in the enterprise, OpenAI today announced several new capabilities coming to ChatGPT and Codex. After months of rumors, the company confirmed that it is bringing the full Codex experience to the ChatGPT app, allowing users to access Codex capabilities without switching to a separate application.

OpenAI also announced Agent Plugins, Sites, and annotations, which are designed to help non-technical teams use Codex for research, analysis, content creation, presentations, dashboards, prototypes, and internal apps.

OpenAI announced six new role-specific plugins that connect Codex with the apps, context, instructions, skills, and workflows used by different teams. Together, the plugins support 62 popular apps and 110 skills:

  • The data analytics plugin is designed for analysts and business teams.
  • The creative production plugin targets marketing and creative teams.
  • The sales plugin targets sales teams by connecting customer context with the tasks required to move deals forward.
  • The product design plugin is built for turning early ideas into prototypes that teams can review.
  • The public equity investing plugin can review earnings, compare companies, monitor signals, and assess whether an investment thesis is getting stronger or weaker for finance professionals.
  • The investment banking plugin helps bankers prepare pitch materials, analyze comparable companies and transactions, and turn research and diligence into client-ready recommendations.

The above plugins work out of the box, but organizations can customize them for their own workflows. OpenAI is also working on similar role-specific plugins for Corporate Finance, Private Equity Investing, Marketing Strategy, Strategy Consulting, and Legal. In the future, OpenAI will allow its partners to create and deploy plugins directly in Codex and ChatGPT. The new role-specific plugins are now rolling out in Codex in supported regions.

OpenAI today announced Sites, a new Codex feature that allows users to create and share interactive hosted websites and apps. Unlike a static document or presentation, Sites can continue to be updated as project information changes. The created sites can be shared with anyone in a workspace through a URL. Sites is now available in preview for Business and Enterprise customers. OpenAI is also working with other companies including Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Webflow, and Emergent as part of its Sites partner ecosystem.

Finally, OpenAI is expanding Codex annotations beyond code, Markdown files, and websites. Annotations can now be used with content including documents, spreadsheets, and slides. With this capability, users can select a specific part of their work and request a targeted change. This allows users to refine the parts of a document that need improvement without asking Codex to recreate the entire file every time.
