We weren’t kind to STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl when it launched back in November 2024. Our review recognised there was a unique open-world FPS at its core, yet a myriad of technical issues drowned out its many strengths. Almost two years later, it’s in a much better place, and Update 2.1 represents GSC Game World’s commitment to respond to feedback until its vision is fully realised.
Two key features define Update 2.1, which arrives roughly two months after the major 2.0 rework and the release of the Cost of Hope expansion: improved A-Life NPC visualisation distances and neutral “squad leader” stalkers that can take you to nearby locations with a new fast travel option.
The new NPC draw/visualisation distance option is surprisingly available on consoles too, though the developers recommend sticking with the old Default setting for the most consistent performance. The Dynamic preset which supposedly adjusts the range to march your PC or console’s capabilities.
On a similar note, long-range firefights have been adjusted with new improvements and balance. GSC explains gunfights will also be heard from further away, “with weapon ballistics adjusted accordingly”.
Perhaps the most tangible addition is the “squad leader” system, which adds neutral NPCs who can be met anywhere in the world; they offer their services to take you to previously visited locations.
The developers have also fixed a long list of bugs and deployed new tweaks, but we recommend reading the full patch notes for a rundown. Moreover, you can get a quick video overview of Update 2.1 below:
STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox on PC & GOG), Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
