Donald Trump has ordered U.S. government agencies to stop using Anthropic’s AI models following the AI startup’s recent feud with the Pentagon.
Following the recent feud between Anthropic and the United States Department of War, President Donald Trump has ordered U.S. government agencies to stop using Anthropic’s AI models. He also requested a phased withdrawal of Anthropic technology from all federal government operations.
In a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump described Anthropic as a “woke,” and “radical left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real world is all about.” He added that Anthropic cannot dictate how the U.S. military should fight and win wars.
“Therefore, I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!” Trump said.
President Donald Trump also ordered that Anthropic technology be phased out across the federal government within six months. He warned that if Anthropic fails to comply with the order, he would use the “full power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow.”
The Pentagon also announced that it would designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk. In a post on X, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated, “Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may engage in any commercial activity with Anthropic.”
Hegseth said the Department of War must have “full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every lawful purpose in defense of the Republic.”
The feud between the U.S. government and Anthropic began after the AI startup stated that it would not allow the Pentagon to use its AI models for military purposes, including surveillance and remote weapons control. Anthropic also said it would challenge the Pentagon’s decision to designate the company as a supply-chain risk.
Just hours after Trump announced the ban on Anthropic, OpenAI seized the opportunity and announced a new deal with the Pentagon.
