Sony kicked off its PlayStation State of Play gaming presentation today with Marvel’s Wolverine as its first showcase. The Insomniac Games-developed title was first announced back in 2021, and finally, a release date was attached to the project today. Despite being set in the same universe as Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, this experience is being called “brutal” and “violent,” as it should be for a game focused on this Marvel character. The studio is promising an “emotionally charged original story” that has Logan and other mutants trying to survive a hostile world.
“The situation is dire and help is limited. Mutants live in the shadows fearful of those hunting them, while the rest of society lives unaware of their existence,” says the studio, explaining the setting. “The only ones potentially capable of protecting their own is Team X, a last-stand mutant task force facing its darkest hour, which Logan rejoins after leaving three years prior. For the mutants, the fight for survival is theirs alone.”
The story will have Wolverine bumping into other iconic Marvel characters like Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabertooth. The trailer itself has Logan even having combo attacks with Jean Grey’s telekenetic abilities, and we may see more X-Men show up later in the storyline.
By attacking, parrying, and killing enemies, Logan is able to heal the damage he is constantly receiving from enemies. If the damage gets too much, he is able to unleash his more animalistic side to gain a big advantage.
Marvel’s Wolverine is releasing on September 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5 consoles. Pre-orders will be going live later today. Anyone with a pre-order will receive extra in-game bonuses like the classic brown suit, reflective claws, an extra ability point for leveling up, and four PlayStation avatars. The standard edition comes in at $69.99, while bumping up to the Digital Deluxe will cost $79.99 for extra in-game benefits. A physical special edition has not been announced yet.
