Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin Is Being Developed By Platinum Games, First Trailer Revealed

Paramount has formed Paramount Games Studio, a unified gaming effort to translate its various IPs into video games, and one of its first games out of the gate will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. We knew this game was in development at Paramount, but now we know that Bayonetta and Nier: Automata developer Platinum Games is developing it, courtesy of the first-ever trailer for the action-adventure game.

Platinum fans will know this isn’t the first time the Osaka-based studio has worked on TMNT, as it’s behind 2016’s hack-and-slash action game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. But given the source material, the potential for The Last Ronin is high. Publisher Paramount Games describes The Last Ronin as a triple-A action-adventure game that will follow the last surviving Ninja Turtle (don’t look up who it is if you don’t know, because that’s part of the mystery and enjoyment of the comic!) on a desperate mission for vengeance. The first trailer aired during today’s Summer Game Fest stream.

“Strong storytelling is what gives a franchise its staying power, and games are one of the most powerful ways for fans to step inside that story,” senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Shawn Kittelsen writes in a press release. “At Paramount Games, we’re unifying creative visions across all of our business divisions from the start, building interconnected worlds where narrative serves as the connective tissue, turning players into lifelong fans and franchises into enduring brands. TMNT: The Last Ronin is the epitome of this vision coming to life.”

Speaking of Paramount Games, Kittelsen, who has worked on Mortal Kombat 11, Injustice 2, The Walking Dead, and Invincible, is just one of many video game industry veterans heading the studio. He’s joined by executive vice president and head of games Dan Prigg, who previously held senior roles at Scopely and Unity, senior vice president of marketing and communications Andrea Silvers, who has worked in leadership at EA and EA Sports, senior vice president of business development and licensing Kara Bilkiss, who has held positions at Sony Pictures and Rogue Games, and senior vice president of engineering Ray Davis, who previously worked on Gears of War, Unreal Engine 4, Xbox, Kinect, and HoloLens.

These five and the others building Paramount Games plan to “transform world-class IP into immersive franchise experiences” with a new studio that includes all of Paramount and Skydance gaming studios, including Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media.

“This division launch marks a meaningful evolution in how we think about games – not as an extension of our business, but as a core pillar of our content strategy alongside film, television, and streaming,” Prigg writes in a press release. “We are committed to creating exceptional games for every type of player, from our casual to AAA, and building enduring experiences across our beloved Paramount IP and original worlds that deepen fan engagement and drive long-term growth.”

That’s a lot of corporate mumbo jumbo we’ll have to take Paramount’s word on, but nonetheless, this new games division is teaming up with Platinum Games to make The Last Ronin, and that’s an exciting prospect.
