Apple discontinued the Mac Pro last week, telling some outlets that it has no future hardware plans for the 20-year-old line. The company removed the Mac Pro from its online store in most regions and confirmed to 9to5Mac on Thursday that the nameplate had officially been axed.
The move follows years of uncertainty about the Mac Pro roadmap, especially after Apple completed its transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon. Apple last updated the Mac Pro in 2023 with the M2 Ultra but kept the infamous 2019 “cheese‑grater” chassis. Later reports suggested that Apple had canceled plans for an even more powerful configuration and had internally designated the Mac Studio as the primary path forward for pro desktops, according to MacRumors.
With the Mac Pro gone, the desktop lineup now centers on the Mac Mini, iMac, and Mac Studio. Current Mac Pro owners can still expect macOS and security updates in line with Apple’s usual support timelines, with no software cutoff in sight.
Desktop users who had their eye on the Mac Pro, use internal PCIe cards, and require high expansion have two options: using external Thunderbolt ports with the Mac Studio or switching to other, non-Apple workstations.
