Fans have been getting snippets about Apple TV’s Neuromancer series for a while now. San Diego Comic-Con finally brought not only a first teaser, but also welcomed co-creator and showrunner Graham Rowland to the Hall H stage to shed a little more light on the William Gibson adaptation.
Star Callum Turner also beamed in a message, in true cyberpunk style. “We’ve been building something special with Neuromancer,” he said. “A world our dear William Gibson imagined in 1984. He didn’t just give us cyberspace; he helped define the entire cyberpunk genre.”
Rowland talked more about that in his quick appearance during Apple TV’s first-ever Hall H presentation. “Forty-two years ago, this book felt like pure science fiction. And, you know, Gibson famously coined the term ‘cyberspace’ to describe a digital world where people in the book go to escape and to interact with, and he did all this before the internet existed,” said Rowland. “He wrote about the collision of artificial intelligence and human intelligence before artificial intelligence existed. Now we’re living in a world 42 years later, where these things are part of all of our everyday lives, so it felt like an appropriate time for us to revisit the text and to put it in a new light now that these things were actually here.”
Turner plays the book’s protagonist, a super-hacker with a troubled past named Case who gets pulled into a very tangled data heist. As Rowland explained, like many of the cast and crew who worked on Neuromancer, Turner came into the project already a big fan of the book.
“Case is kind of an atypical protagonist: he’s a criminal, a little bit rough around the edges, and he’s a survivor,” Rowland explained. “But one of the things that we all kind of gravitated to early on was this idea that in the book there’s no mention of his family, so he’s kind of an orphan. Everything he’s doing, he’s doing out of an instinct of survival and sort of a desperation, and I think that Callum threads that needle. He’s also able to play the dangerous part of Case, the part that is the criminal, but he’s also able to inhabit the humanity and the charisma.”
“One of the things that we felt was very important was that this is very much Case’s story,” he continued. “From the beginning to the end, you’re following him, and that charisma needs to carry you along for 10 episodes. And Callum certainly brought that.”
The rest of the cast includes Briana Middleton, Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, Peter Sarsgaard, and Clémence Poésy, as well as Max Irons, Dane DeHaan, Junia Rees, Jordan Kouamé, Emma Laird, Marc Menchaca, André De Shields, and Isabella Pappas.
Neuromancer arrives on Apple TV on January 22, 2027, with the first two episodes; the rest roll out weekly through March 19.
